Baseball Karma

Baseball Karma
By John Kochanski

It is amazing how momentum, streaks and slumps play such a significant role in the game of baseball. You know the saying "we're on a roll". It seems when things are going good they continue that way and, unfortunately, it's the same when you're on the other side of the fence. And that is what I call "baseball karma".

What is Baseball Karma

Baseball Karma has nothing to do with having the physical abilities to excel in the game of baseball. It has everything to do with your baseball mindset. If you believe in yourself, and your team, and you have a positive attitude the baseball karma is with you.

Baseball karma is the belief that, no matter how dire things may appear, you still believe that you can win. Of course, teams are going to lose but to be able to come out and with the same positive attitude the next game is what baseball karma is all about.

Example of Baseball Karma

I mean you baseball karma affecting the game all the time. Take a look at the Milwaukee Brewers. At the end of August they appeared destined to make the playoffs. But like the previous year, they are floundering in September and may not make the playoffs for the second time in two years.

It is so bad that management actually fired the manager with about twelve games left. Did they fire the manager for insubordination? No, Did they do it because his strategies were wrong? No, again.

The front office made the change because it appeared that his players had lost confidence in him. So by replacing the manager they are looking to change the mental attitudes of the players and bring in a new positive influence. This is the greatest example of how baseball karma affects the game of baseball.

Is there any way to measure baseball karma? There are some obvious signs such as the body language of players, how hard they play on the field and how they come together as a team.

We won't know if the managerial change in Milwaukee will work; we will have to wait and see.

Learn Baseball Karma.

Baseball Drills - Staying Motivated While You Practice

Baseball Drills - Staying Motivated While You Practice
By Nate Barnett

One of the biggest challenges a coach faces is to successfully instill a long-term motivation and vision in practice during the typical lengthy baseball season. It's not uncommon for a high school player to spend February through August doing baseball drills, workouts, training, and of course participating in games. So the question must be asked, how can you create a sense of urgency and long-term focus during the hundreds of hours of baseball drills throughout the season?

This is where goals come into play. Though I will say, be careful how you use the term "goals", the reaction of your athletes may be less than excited. I prefer the term, "road map". Whether it be to play in high school, college, or professionally, you will be much more likely to find your athletes will perform the baseball drills and workouts you create efficiently if you help them continually expand their road map. Without a clear and defined road map, you'll end up wasting a lot of practice time and will most certainly find it tough to help your players stay motivated throughout the duration of the season.

I'm sure you've agreed with me thus far that a road map creation process is vital to the success to an athlete. But let me give you one tangible and practical way to help enlarge the thinking of your players.

Think of it this way. If the goal is to get to the Big Leagues, there are some serious rewards that come with the title of Big Leaguer. One of the benefits of course is economic. Lets say a talented and successful player makes one million dollars annually playing professionally. Broken down over a career of practicing and working hard on baseball drills, that's about 20 grand per practice! Obviously it largely depends on the age of the athlete whose dream is to play in the Bigs, but I'm sure you can do the math and figure out the amount of money per practice. Have the athlete deposit the money in his mental bank account only if he's worked hard during his practice.

The mind is an amazing thing. Help your athletes develop it so they may achieve their full potential.

Nate Barnett is owner of BMI Baseball designed to improve the mental game of baseball in athletes. Learn how to help your game by improving the skill of mental baseball.

Instilling A Winning Effort Into Little League Baseball Players

Instilling A Winning Effort Into Little League Baseball Players
By Stephen K Reynold

Getting adults to understand the importance of a clear perspective on winning and losing is very difficult let alone do the same with little league baseball players. Here I will show why it is important that adults need to show the way for young athletes to understand the objective in sports.

Let's get right into it shall we. Too often i hear especially at the major boys level (11-12 year olds) it all about winning! Well that's great, I like winning as much as anyone and i get very competitive. However I am an adult and and the coach who needs to keep the players with a great understanding of competition.

The Great and not late John Wooden says you are only a failure if you have not given a complete effort at all times whether on the field of court. What do I mean? if you are get beat by another team or individual it's OK as long as you gave your best. It happens, you tip your hat and move on. Sure we're disappointed in the outcome but not in our effort. After the games are gone what are the players going to take with them about sports and competition?

We are not talking about pro sports here yet that same axiom should and does apply with them most of the time. My point is this you can win a game and not be happy with your players effort and they need to hear about it.

Just last week I watched the team my son is on and that I help with win a game 3-1 against a young team that we should have defeated 8-1 or more. To the other teams credit they played us hard and were right there at the end. Our team made base running blunders that took us out of innings and eliminated additional scoring opportunities.

We had players giving up on plays when they should have been going all out and making the other team beat us with their best instead we gave them easy outs. here is the main point I'm driving here is to make the other team beat you, don't hand it to them. That is not acceptable. I mentioned something to them at practice last night and the best player on the team said well we won anyway! Wrong answer!!

We play one of the better teams in our league and that 3 runs wouldn't have been enough and we left 3-4 runs out there on the field with a lousy effort.

Players need to understand to play aggressive baseball at all times and know that that is what competition is all about. My best against your best!

Remember coaches you are a teacher and these values go way past playing baseball. Teach them the right way to play the game and have fun with it.

The Problem With Baseball Training Aids

Joe Mauer Quick Swing Trainer

The Problem With Baseball Training Aids
By Joseph Harrison Jr

When it comes to America's game, many people try to cash in on baseballs popularity by providing baseball training aids. This is something that coaches and teachers of the game should be leery of when getting involved with baseball instruction. Not only are there baseball instruction videos and equipment, a lot of the coaches of little league do not know the fundamentals of the game. This is primarily because they are fathers or mothers who just want to get involved with what their children are doing.

It is important for beginning players to be taught the basics of baseball before concentrating on other advanced techniques. If this is not done, then players get confused and may not be able to perform to their potential. Just because a person played baseball early in life does not make them an expert on the game or on teaching someone else about the correct stance, swing, pitch or catch. This game is a game of technique. If the aid or coach does not know the techniques involved in baseball they will not be a good coach.

It is imperative that a coach or training aid used to instruct players on the game of baseball is a qualified individual. They should have some instruction themselves from people who have taught the game at the highest levels or become an assistant to someone who knows how to train and teach the game of baseball. When it comes to throwing and hitting the techniques are important. These fundamentals should be taught from an early age to ensure that the players will improve from beginners to experts in their positions. When this is not done correctly then it will frustrate the player or even make them quit a game that can be played for the rest of their life.

Finding the right coach or training aid that will correctly instruct the players at each position is something that must be considered before getting involved in coaching. This should begin with the involvement of the league. Every league has a group of individuals who decide on who will coach each team and the rules of the game for their district.

When the league board chooses a coach or training aid for each team, they should take every aspect under consideration to prevent improper coaching or training. No one who knows the game of baseball will refuse to use the best baseball training aids available to ensure that the players perform well and enjoy themselves doing so.

I am Joseph Harrison, a baseball coach since 20 years ago. I love baseball since I am young, especially the feeling when you know you will absolutely crush the ball. Training your kid to gain interest in baseball will benefit him from both mentally and physically. In with he will gain team spirit, learn how to cope with teammates, and at the same time train up his physical, and concentration (to have good eye and hand coordination and the ability to use both at once). Go through my article and you will know all the benefits of baseball.

Youth Baseball Hitting - How to Fix Your Baseball Swing

Youth Baseball Hitting - How to Fix Your Baseball Swing
By Brian McClure

To hit the ball well takes a lot of practice. Youth baseball is actually easier than for older players because there is only the basics to learn and develop. This makes it easy for as as coaches to improve our youth baseball teams hitting.

We still must do it right. Practice does not always make perfect. The practice must be effective and done correctly or the mind and body will instill the wrong mechanics.

Hitting off the tee - has probably been a lost art. It is however making a comeback in certain circles. I have always started batting practice by hitting off the tee. Yes..all ages. Purpose of the tee is to load the bat and get our weight back. First check that the players hands are in the right place..batting stance should comfortable. Second, Load the bat (Body and hands go slightly back and front foot comes up) Third, short quick swing.

Common mistakes to look for and avoid is the player dropping his hands and and weight back to far which is caused by wrapping the hands around the head. Wrapping the bat and Dropping the hands is usually the youth baseball player trying to hit a hard fly ball. It lengthens the swing and there will difficulty in hitting the ball correctly(popups) if at all, in live pitching.

Soft Toss - My favorite way to practice hitting. A youth baseball coach (or whoever is doing the tossing) can get a lot of control over the ball and watch the mechanics without fear of injury. The most common way I see soft toss done is from the side of the batter. I prefer to use a screen and toss from the front. This better simulates the pitch and the tosser and see the hands, head, and stride better too. Franklin L-Frame Pitching Screen
Work on strike tosses in the middle, inside, and outside... up, down. Toss in a few balls too so the player can work on learning the strike zone also. As you see a lot of work can be done in a short period of time.
If you toss from the side ,it is best to have net to target the balls.

Free Hitting - Turn 'em loose. Pitch or use a pitching machine and let the youth baseball player work on improving his hitting with live pitches without a lot of coaching at this point. Let the player have fun and just hit away. The Tee drill and soft toss is to work on mechanics. Now Focus on the ball and Swing.

These tips and basic batting practice strategy will greatly help your players improve their hitting skills. As a parent you can quickly move your son to the meat of the batting order with these simple batting practice two or three times a week. As coaches we should try and implement some batting practice every practice. The best way is to divide them into groups..some work on tee..move to ..the soft toss..then free hitting and move on to shagging.

Fix Your Hitting With Baseball Hitting Aids

Fix Your Hitting With Baseball Hitting Aids
By Joseph Harrison Jr

Hitter is one of the most important positions in baseball, and hitting a baseball coming at such great speeds is way more complicated than anyone would suspect. Many problems that keep a player from hitting the ball well are not too easy to detect, and this can cause some serious frustrations. Issues hindering a hitter's performance at the bat can be a lack of knowing the proper mechanics of hitting, which is often fixed through learning about your body and using baseball hitting aids.

Focusing too much on the upper body when hitting is among the most common problems a hitter faces, and this is not really thought of as an issue because you hold a bat in your hands; however, proper positioning of your lower half of the body is a must for great hitting.

Attempting to hit the baseball without knowing how to position your lower half is like building your home without laying a reliable foundation, it will never stay up.

Many problems faced by players include: shoulder dipping, which is a result of your backside collapsing, hunching way out over the plate, and when a hitters hands extend out and away from their body in the middle of a swing. All of these problems faced by hitters may be caused by not knowing what to do with the lower body during your time at the plate.

When hitters "load" right before the pitch, they are in fact shifting their weight onto the lack leg to gain stability, and if the weight does not stay there this could be a problem. If the player shifts their hips forward and in the direction of the pitcher, this will result in many if not all of those problems listed. This hips shifting problem is called "floating", and it is fairly common among baseball hitters.

Upon recognizing the problem you have as "floating" one can then begin to fix this problem with their swing. There are many hitting aids one can use to find and fix their hitting problems, and these include videos, books, and tutorials. These aids will have you ready to fix the upper body swing problems.

The use of these types of aids will allow you to recognize which of these very common issues you have and will then have you ready to hit better than you ever expected. Good sources for hitting aids could be your local bookstore, library, and also you can find many sources online.

Little League Digest - 10 Base Running Tips For Little League Baseball Players

Little League Digest - 10 Base Running Tips For Little League Baseball Players

By Nick Dixon

There are several important coaching points that need to be remembered when teaching Little League players to run the bases correctly. This article presents 10 coaching points for little league baseball runners related to first baseball.

Coaching Points related to base running at 1st base:

1. The batter must sprint out of the batter's box and take a straight line path toward first base. The batter base runner must "honor" the base running box. The base running box allows the umpire to determine if a base runner is inside the base line. If a runner gets inside the foul line and a throw ball makes contact with the runner, the batter base runner is out. If a ball is a slow roller in the direction of first base, the batter base runner must avoid contact with the ball. Stepping on, contacting or touching the ball in fair territory will result in an out.
2. When a batter hits the ball his approach to first base is determined by the location of the hit ball as it travels into the field. If the ball is a fielded grounder, the base runner will run through the bag at 1st.
3. If the hit ball gets by the infielder, either as a hit or error, the batter base runner should do a "hook" path as he approaches first base to give him a straighter angle to advance to second base if the first base coach sends him.
4. The batter base runner should run hard through the bag when he is attempting to beat a throw to first. The runner should concentrate on running to a spot about 15 feet past the bag. When the runner touches the bag, the runner's foot should land on the front 1/3 of the bag.
5. The batter base runner should always look to the right when he crosses the bag on a close play. This look allows the batter base runner to see if the throw was missed by the first baseman.
6. If the base runner is sent to second, the runner should only contact the inner corner of the base as he makes the turn toward second base.
7. The runner should always run everything out as if the ball is fair. The runner should hustle and assume that all fly balls will be missed.
8. The runner must run out all foul balls because of the "roll back" rule. If a foul ball hits and kicks back into fair territory between home and 1st base or between home and 3rd base, the ball is fair. The ball will be fair as long as the ball does not contact a bat, fence, dugout, or fielder.
9. The batter base runner that sees an errant throw should not immediately advance to second. The runner must listen to his coach. The coach will make sure that the catcher is not trailing the play.
10. Older or advanced runners may be taught to read the firstbaseman's footwork to detect a possible catch ad tag play. If the throw from the fielder pulls the first baseman off the bag, the only possibility for getting the runner out is a tag. If the runner sees the first baseman coming off the bag toward him, he should slide to avoid the tag.
